AGAC 2024 Top 100!
This artwork is inspired by the masterpiece "The Foxes" by Franz Marc created in 1913.
It pays homage to Marc's use of symbolism and his cubist visual style to convey deeper emotional and spiritual truths, and the interconnectedness of animals with their natural habitat.
The springbok has become a powerful symbol of unity for South Africans through its use as the mascot for the South African rugby team. We are different races, speak different languages, and come from many walks of life, but we are united in supporting the team and the national pride it evokes. The cubist elements of fragmented forms, shapes, and vibrant colors represent our rich cultural diversity and multi-layered past. The springboks are recognisable in this fragmented composition, which symbolises our unity as South Africans.
In Marc's work, the two foxes are seemingly engaged in a playful courtship under a night sky. Aligning with and building on the idea of continuity and the circle of life, I depict a springbok ewe and lamb, but in contrast, under a sunny African sky, symbolizing our connection to Mother Nature through the biodiversity, and wildlife of our country.
